EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving, titled "The grey-headed green Woodpecker" showcases the artistic brilliance of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Created between 1749-73, this print is a testament to their talent in capturing the beauty of nature. The image depicts a stunning grey-headed green woodpecker perched on a branch, its vibrant plumage contrasting against the lush foliage. The intricate details of each feather are meticulously engraved, bringing the bird to life on paper. The woodpecker's intense gaze and poised stance exude both grace and power. Originally engraved by George Edwards for his renowned works on uncommon birds, these plates were later re-engraved by Michael Seligmann. Combining Edwards' illustrations with Catesby's work on Carolina's natural history, Seligmann added his own touch by translating names into German and incorporating additional figures and plants. This particular print is part of a private collection but has been made available through ePurix Verlag Volker Christen. Its inclusion in this collection highlights its significance as an exquisite example of ornithological artistry. "The grey-headed green Woodpecker" stands as a testament to the timeless appeal of natural history illustrations. It not only captures the essence of this magnificent bird but also represents the collaboration between two talented artists who sought to celebrate nature's wonders through their craft.
