EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The Grey-Headed Duck, 1749-73" showcases the exquisite talent of George Edwards and Michael Seligmann. Originally engraved by Edwards in his renowned works on uncommon birds, this particular print has been re-engraved by Seligmann, who combined it with Catesby's work on the natural history of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands. Seligmann, a German engraver and art dealer from Nuremberg, added his unique touch to the plates by translating names into German and introducing additional figures and plants not found in the original illustrations. The result is a stunning fusion of artistic styles that beautifully captures the essence of this magnificent bird. "The Grey-Headed Duck" depicts Anas canadensis capite griseo-coeruleo with its striking grey-blue head. This fine example of ornithological illustration highlights both its beauty and scientific accuracy. Every intricate detail is meticulously rendered through delicate lines and vibrant colours. Displayed in a private collection but made available for public appreciation through ePurix Verlag Volker Christen, this print offers an opportunity to delve into the world of natural history.
