EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The Great Horned Owl from Athens, 1749-73" transports us back to the 18th century. Created by George Edwards and re-engraved by Michael Seligmann, this print showcases the remarkable collaboration between two talented artists. The intricate details of the owl's feathers and piercing eyes are brought to life through Seligmann's masterful engraving technique. The owl itself is a majestic creature, exuding an air of wisdom and mystery. Its large horns symbolize strength and power, while its graceful posture adds an element of elegance. Originally featured in George Edwards' renowned works on uncommon birds, this particular print combines elements from Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". Seligmann skillfully translated names into German and added additional figures and plants not present in the original illustrations. Displayed against a simple background, this engraving captures the essence of natural history illustration during that era. It serves as a testament to both artistic talent and scientific curiosity prevalent at the time. Now preserved in a private collection, this print continues to captivate viewers with its timeless beauty. As we gaze upon it today, we can appreciate how art has always played a vital role in documenting our natural world throughout history.
