EDITORS COMMENTS
The Great Booby, 1749-73 (coloured engraving) captures the exquisite beauty of nature through the skilled artistry of Mark Catesby and Michael Seligmann. This print showcases a rare bird species, meticulously illustrated with vibrant colors and intricate details. Originally engraved by George Edwards in his renowned works on uncommon birds, this particular version was re-engraved by Seligmann, a talented German artist and art dealer. Combining Edwards' work with Catesby's A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, Seligmann added his own touch by translating names into German and incorporating additional figures and plants not present in the original illustrations. The result is a stunning depiction of "Der grosse DAolpel" showcasing the majesty of this magnificent creature. The booby stands tall against a backdrop of lush foliage, its feathers rendered with precision to capture every nuance. Its piercing gaze seems to invite viewers into its world, evoking a sense of wonder at the diversity found within our natural environment. This print serves as a testament to both artistic skill and scientific exploration. It offers us an opportunity to appreciate the rich tapestry of life that exists beyond our everyday experience while reminding us of our responsibility to protect these precious creatures for future generations.
