EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving titled "The Crested Bittern, 1749-73" transports us back to the era of exploration and discovery. Created by Mark Catesby, a renowned naturalist and artist, this print showcases the beauty of the American crested bittern in stunning detail. Originally engraved by George Edwards, another prominent figure in natural history illustration, this particular version was re-engraved by Michael Seligmann. Seligmann's contribution included translating names into German and adding additional figures and plants not found in the original works. The image depicts a majestic crested bittern perched on a branch amidst its natural habitat. The bird's distinctive crest stands tall as it gazes intently into the distance. Its plumage is meticulously rendered with vibrant colors that bring it to life on paper. This artwork not only serves as an exquisite example of ornithological illustration but also represents a collaboration between talented artists from different eras. It combines elements from Edwards' "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" with Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands" resulting in a unique representation that captures both accuracy and artistic flair. "The Crested Bittern, 1749-73" invites us to appreciate nature's wonders through artistry and scientific observation. It reminds us of our fascination with avian species throughout history while showcasing the skillful craftsmanship behind these intricate engravings.
