(fabric) by French School, (17th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Waistcoat from the uniform of a French General Officer or Marshal 1690 circa-1710.
This magnificent item of uniform would have been worn by a French General Officer or Marshal during the period of the Nine Years War (1688-1697) or the War of the Spanish Succession (1702-1713).
The waistcoat has full-length sleeves which follow late 17th century civilian fashion. The pink dye used for the waistcoat is a natural one made from insects. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a waistcoat from the uniform of a French General Officer or Marshal dating back to 1690-1710. Displayed at the National Army Museum in London, this exquisite garment offers a glimpse into the fashion and military history of the late 17th century. Believed to have been worn during either the Nine Years War or the War of Spanish Succession, this waistcoat symbolizes power and authority. Its full-length sleeves reflect the civilian fashion trends prevalent during that era. What makes this piece truly remarkable is its vibrant pink color, achieved through natural dye made from insects. Although natural dyes were not known for their longevity, this uniform has defied time and remained remarkably well-preserved. As we admire this magnificent item, it transports us back to an era when generals commanded armies on battlefields and marshals led troops with unwavering determination. The attention to detail in both design and craftsmanship speaks volumes about the importance placed on appearance even amidst war. The significance of this waistcoat lies not only in its historical context but also in its ability to evoke emotions and curiosity within us today. It serves as a reminder that behind every great military leader lies an individual who donned such regalia with pride, representing their nation's strength and honor. Through Bridgeman Images' lens, we are fortunate enough to witness firsthand this extraordinary artifact that encapsulates centuries-old stories of bravery and valor.
