EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite craftsmanship and timeless elegance of Mme Darsonval's Parisian fashion from 1897-99. Created by the French School in the 19th century, this stunning piece is now housed at the Manchester Art Gallery in the UK. The garment itself is a true work of art, constructed with meticulous attention to detail. Made from grey wool and silk poplin, it features delicate lace trimmings that add a touch of femininity and grace. The bodice boasts a pleated grey silk frill edged with cream lace, fastening over the left front for an asymmetrical yet balanced look. A high standing collar adds sophistication to this already refined ensemble, while shaped and stiffened epaulettes elevate its regal appeal. The waistband is adorned with gathered bows on either side of a separate skirt opening at the back, creating an alluring silhouette that falls gracefully down the wearer's back. Noteworthy details include three grey chiffon roses delicately placed along the right side seam and a pocket discreetly located to the left of center back. A printed label on the waistband reveals that Mme Darsonval was known for her robes and manteaux at 17 Rue Chanez in Paris. This extraordinary piece exemplifies both historical significance and artistic beauty, making it a prized possession within Manchester Art Gallery's collection.
