MAN464493 Felling a Karri Tree, Western Australia, from the series Australia's Wealth of Wheat and Wool, 1929 (colour litho) by Webb, Archibald Bertram (1887-1944); Manchester Art Gallery, UK; (add.info.: commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Dobson, Molle Ltd for HMSO;*
Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. However, for a contemporary audience, the posters sometimes express uncomfortable beliefs and raise difficult questions about the legacies of the Empire today.); © Manchester Art Gallery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Felling a Karri Tree, Western Australia" is part of the renowned series called "Australia's Wealth of Wheat and Wool" from 1929. Created by Archibald Bertram Webb, this colour lithograph showcases the immense scale and significance of the timber industry in Western Australia during that time. Commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board (EMB) and printed by Dobson, Molle Ltd for HMSO*, this artwork was intended to promote sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions, and its Colonies. The Manchester Art Gallery proudly holds an intriguing collection of artist-designed posters commissioned by the EMB between 1926 and 1933. The poster campaign aimed to transform Britons into conscious consumers who supported their empire. With over 200 posters acquired in the 1930s, Manchester Art Gallery possesses a powerful visual representation of diverse aspects within the British Empire - its people, places, and products. However, viewing these posters through a contemporary lens can evoke discomforting beliefs while raising challenging questions about the legacies left behind by colonialism. Despite this complexity, it remains essential to appreciate these works as historical artifacts that shed light on both past achievements and ongoing debates surrounding imperialism. With Bridgeman Images holding copyright for this particular print from Fine Art Finder, we are reminded once again how art can serve as a catalyst for reflection on our collective history.
