The Yeomen of the Guard (colour photo)
8669252 The Yeomen of the Guard (colour photo) by English Photographer, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: The Yeomen of the Guard. The King's Bodyguard of the Yeomen of the Guard was founded by King Henry VII after the Battle of Bosworth, and until the reign of King George II it was its duty to attend the King on the field of battle. One of the most interesting customs still observed by the Yeomen of the Guard is that of searching the vaults of the Palace of Westminster prior to the opening of Parliament. This duty owes its inception to the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes was involved in the famous conspiracy to destroy Parliament. Our picture shows the Yeomen of the Guard leaving the Victoria Tower after the completion of their search.
