5929923 Webley.455 inch Mk I* service revolver, pattern 1894 (revolver, service, breechloading, .455 in Mk I*) by English School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Webley.455 inch Mk I* service revolver, pattern 1894.
The heavy Enfield revolvers introduced in 1880 were not popular and were replaced in 1887 with Webley and SonAs Mk 1, which cost 61 shillings (£ 3 1s.) each. This compact revolver with a four-inch barrel became the standard British Army sidearm and remained in service, with various modifications, into the 1930s and beyond.
This example was originally a Mk I 1887 pattern but when repaired was brought up to Mk I* (the equivalent of Mk II) standard in 1894. It was issued to the Devon Officer Training Corps in 1912.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Webley . 455 inch Mk I* service revolver, pattern 1894. Produced by the English School in the 19th century, this image is housed at the National Army Museum in London. The Webley . 455 inch Mk I* service revolver was a significant improvement over its predecessor, the heavy Enfield revolvers introduced in 1880. Due to their lack of popularity, they were replaced with this sleek and compact four-inch barrel revolver in 1887. Each unit cost a mere 61 shillings (£3 1s. ), making it an affordable choice for the British Army. This particular example started as a Mk I 1887 pattern but underwent repairs and upgrades to bring it up to Mk I* (equivalent of Mk II) standard in 1894. It served faithfully with various modifications well into the 1930s and beyond. Intriguingly, this specific Webley . 455 inch Mk I* service revolver was issued to the Devon Officer Training Corps in 1912. Its historical significance adds depth and character to an already remarkable piece of weaponry. Captured beautifully by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder, this print allows us to appreciate not only its craftsmanship but also its rich history within military circles. A true testament to British engineering excellence, this Webley revolver remains an enduring symbol of strength and reliability even today.
