Gouache on mica by a Company artist, Trichinopoly, 1835 circa.
The Madras Army sepoy wears a uniform very similar to that worn by a British infantryman of the period, a red coatee and white trousers. By the 1820s, the latter had replaced shorts in most Indian regiments. Unlike their British counterparts, Indian infantry wore black shakos formed of pitch over rattan cane and sandals instead of boots.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Sepoy from the Madras Army in 1835, captured beautifully through gouache on mica by an unknown artist. Housed at the National Army Museum in London, this artwork offers a glimpse into the unique attire and equipment of Indian infantrymen during that era. The sepoy's uniform bears striking similarities to that of British infantrymen at the time, with a vibrant red coatee and crisp white trousers. However, there are distinct differences as well. Instead of shorts commonly worn by their British counterparts, Indian soldiers opted for white trousers. The most notable distinction lies in their headgear - black shakos made from pitch over rattan cane replaced traditional hats or helmets. Interestingly, this artwork is part of a larger collection depicting various occupations across India. It serves as both historical documentation and artistic expression, shedding light on the diverse cultures within society during this period. Preserved meticulously over time, this print allows us to appreciate the intricate details and craftsmanship involved in creating such pieces. As we admire this exquisite representation of a Madras Army sepoy, we are reminded of the rich history and traditions that have shaped our world today.
