When the cargo steamer Trevessa, with a cargo of phosphates, foundered off the Australian coast in 1923 her crew took to the boats, but were unable to beat back to land. Captain Cecil Foster determined to risk sailing across the Indian Ocean, and after nearly a month's terrible hardship the two boats made land at Mauritius and Rodriguez Island respectively, some 1,700 miles away. They had suffered terribly from thirst, but magnificent seamanship and pluck carried them through.
