EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of the Pattern 1887 Heavy cavalry officers undress sword. Created in 1893 by the English School, this metal masterpiece is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The sword belonged to Major Arthur Churchill Bailward, a distinguished officer of the Royal Horse Artillery. Commissioned in 1874, Bailward served with great valor during significant conflicts such as the 2nd Afghan War and the Boer War. His remarkable career came to an abrupt halt when he was captured at Colenso in 1899. Despite this setback, Bailward's legacy remains intact. Henry Wilkinson of London meticulously crafted this exceptional blade, etching it with a motto, royal coat of arms, and regimental name. These intricate details symbolize both personal pride and allegiance to his country. In this photograph, we are reminded not only of the skillful artistry behind military weaponry but also of the brave soldiers who wielded them on battlefields throughout history. The presence of badge insignia and coat-of-arms further emphasizes their dedication to duty and honor. As we gaze upon this image from Fine Art Finder courtesy of Bridgeman Images, let us reflect on those who have served their nations selflessly – protecting freedom while carrying symbols that represent bravery and sacrifice.
