The War Office and Admiralty recently appointed a joint committee of military and naval officers to examine plans for the defence of Southsea and Portsmouth two and harbour against a hostile squadron which might possibly run in past the forts at Spithead. It is considered that the buildings on the Clarence Pier, the Esplanade Hotel and the Pavilion which are in the direct line of view, and of artillery fire between the Kings Bastion and the entrance channel, must be immediately removed.); Look and Learn / Illustrated Papers Collection

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in the history of Southsea, Hampshire. Taken on 2nd May 1896 by an English photographer, it showcases "The Clarence Pier, Southsea, Buildings to be removed". The image is part of a private collection and was originally published as an illustration for The Illustrated London News. During this time, the War Office and Admiralty had formed a joint committee to strategize the defense of Southsea and Portsmouth against potential enemy attacks. In light of their findings, it was deemed necessary to remove several prominent buildings that obstructed the line of view and artillery fire between Kings Bastion and the entrance channel. In this photo print, we can see the iconic Clarence Pier alongside other structures like the Esplanade Hotel and Pavilion. These buildings stood directly in front of the seafront promenade, offering picturesque views but hindering military operations. The image provides us with a glimpse into late 19th-century coastal life in England. It portrays not only architectural elements but also hints at beach scenes with people enjoying leisurely strolls along the shore. This historic photograph serves as a reminder of how landscapes evolve over time due to changing needs and priorities. Bridgeman Images has preserved this piece from Fine Art Finder's collection for enthusiasts who appreciate maritime history or have an interest in early photography techniques.
