5921718 Buff leather jerkin, 1640 circa (leather) by English School, (17th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Buff leather jerkin, 1640 circa.
This jerkin was worn by a harquebusier (light cavalryman) of the Civil War period. Sometimes it might be covered by back and breastplate armour to provide extra protection. Some troopers would also wear a leather bandolier over a shoulder, while others replaced the bandolier with a belt pouch. Horsemen would also wear tall leather riding boots. A leather jerkin like this was expensive, but it was lighter and more comfortable to wear than armour, and was good at stopping sword cuts.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a buff leather jerkin from around 1640, crafted by the English School of the 17th century. Housed in the National Army Museum in London, this exquisite piece offers a glimpse into the attire worn by harquebusiers during the Civil War era. The jerkin served as a vital component of a light cavalryman's ensemble, providing additional protection when combined with back and breastplate armor. Some troopers would adorn themselves with a leather bandolier slung over their shoulder, while others opted for a belt pouch instead. Completing their equestrian look, horsemen would don tall leather riding boots. Although expensive, this leather jerkin offered several advantages over traditional armor. Its lightweight construction allowed for greater mobility and comfort on the battlefield without compromising safety. The sturdy material proved effective at deflecting sword cuts and provided an essential layer of defense. Preserved through time, this remarkable artifact not only represents historical fashion but also serves as a testament to the ingenuity and adaptability of soldiers throughout history. Through its intricate details and craftsmanship, we are reminded of the sacrifices made by those who wore such garments to protect their lives while fighting for causes they believed in.
