EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a pivotal moment in history, showcasing the 12th Sudanese Battalion anxiously awaiting the impending Dervish attack in Omdurman on September 2,1898. This photograph, taken by an unknown photographer from the 19th century, is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. In this image, members of the battalion can be seen manning a makeshift line as they prepare for what would become the deciding battle of the Second Sudan War. Situated just north of Khartoum, Omdurman marked Major-General Sir Horatio Herbert Kitchener's campaign to reclaim Sudan. Kitchener commanded a formidable force consisting of 8,000 British regulars and a mixed contingent of 17,000 Egyptian and Sudanese soldiers armed with modern rifles, Maxim guns, and artillery. Their well-equipped forces easily overpowered Abdullah al-Tshi's Dervish army numbering around 50,000. Despite their victory being assured from historical accounts today; however it was not without its costs. The British force suffered losses with 48 men killed and another 382 wounded while inflicting heavy casualties on their opponents—10,000 dead and approximately13 , 000 wounded among them. This photograph serves as a testament to both the bravery displayed by those who fought during this significant conflict as well as an important record of military history.
