The library at Rufford Abbey, Nottinghamshire, captured in this photograph from Giles Worsley's book 'England's Lost Houses, ' takes us back in time to the grandeur of a bygone era. The medieval house, built on the grounds of a 12th-century Cistercian abbey, was remodeled by Anthony Salvin for the Savile family in the mid-19th century. This image showcases the exquisite interior of the library, with its stone chimneypiece and intricate plasterwork ceiling. In the center stands an early 20th-century portrait of King Edward VII painted by Augustus Savile himself. The room exudes an air of elegance and sophistication that was characteristic of stately homes during that period. Sadly, this magnificent estate fell into disrepair after being requisitioned during World War II and was eventually demolished in 1956. However, through this photograph, we can still appreciate its former glory. The composition also captures other intriguing elements within the frame. A full-length advertisement for a London saddler shop is visible through one windowpane while an elephant statue stands proudly beside it.
