EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph captures the powerful presence of John Chrysostom as he preaches in Constantinople. Known for his eloquence and earnestness, St. John Chrysostom earned the title "golden-mouthed" due to his exceptional oratory skills. Born in Antioch around 347 AD, he rose to prominence and was appointed Archbishop of Constantinople in 398. Despite his revered position, St. John Chrysostom fearlessly spoke out against vices within society, leading to his banishment by Empress Eudoxia. He ultimately passed away in exile on September 14th, 407 AD. His remains were later brought back to Constantinople with great honor and reverence in 438. The artist Robert Ambrose Dudley beautifully captures the essence of this historical figure's preaching moment, showcasing the passion and conviction that defined St. John Chrysostom's life and legacy. This lithograph serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact that individuals can have through their words and actions throughout history. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported back in time to witness a pivotal moment in Constantinople's rich history, where faith intersected with political power and moral courage prevailed against adversity. St. John Chrysostom's story continues to inspire generations with its timeless message of speaking truth to power and standing firm in one's beliefs despite the consequences.
