EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white etching, titled "A wagoners shanty, 1876" transports us back to a winter camp during the American Civil War. Created by Edwin Austin Forbes, a member of the French Etching Club and an eyewitness to the war as he traveled with the Union Army from 1862-1865, this print offers a glimpse into the harsh realities faced by soldiers. The image is divided into three separate scenes. In the upper left corner, we see a wagoner diligently chopping wood in front of his log cabin. The overhang of crossed branches and brush provides some shelter from the elements. Smoke rises from a wooden barrel atop the chimney, indicating warmth within. Moving to the upper right corner, our eyes are drawn to "The Deserted Picket-hut". This desolate scene features a tent-like structure covered in dirt, symbolizing abandonment and loss amidst conflict. Finally, at the bottom of the etching is "Mud Huts" showcasing several huts emitting smoke through chimneys topped with wooden barrels. A man sits on a log bench in front of one hut while clothes hang on a line nearby - small signs of life amidst challenging circumstances. Through intricate details and masterful technique, Forbes captures both resilience and hardship in this powerful artwork. As we gaze upon it today, we are reminded of those who endured unimaginable conditions during this tumultuous period in history.
