EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Gaston Jean Baptiste de France, the duke of Orleans, during the 17th century. The handcolored illustration by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard beautifully captures the essence of this historical figure. Gaston Jean Baptiste de France, a prominent member of French royalty, is depicted in exquisite detail and regal attire. His noble stature and confident gaze reflect his influential position within society during this era. The lithograph was skillfully executed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie under the direction of Georges Duplessis for his publication "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries) in Paris in 1867. This book served as a continuation to an earlier series on costumes from previous centuries. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard's artistic prowess shines through in this piece as he expertly brings Gaston Jean Baptiste de France to life with vibrant colors and intricate details. Florilegius has preserved this remarkable image that offers us a glimpse into history and allows us to appreciate both the artistry involved in its creation and the significance of Gaston Jean Baptiste de France's role within French nobility.
