EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a glimpse into the 17th-century Dutch bourgeoisie life, as depicted in Gabriel Metzu's painting. The image features a dutiful housewife elegantly dressed, holding a milk pail, accompanied by her page. The handcolored illustration by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard beautifully brings to life the intricate details of their attire and surroundings. The lithograph was part of Georges Duplessis' renowned publication "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), released in Paris in 1867. This book served as an extension to Camille Bonnard and Paul Mercuri's earlier series on costumes from the 12th to the 15th centuries. Georges Duplessis, curator of the Prints department at Bibliotheque nationale during that time, meticulously curated this collection to provide an invaluable resource for scholars and enthusiasts interested in historical fashion. Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard played a significant role in bringing these historical costumes to life through his artistic talent as both an illustrator and interior designer. His attention to detail is evident in this lithograph which captures not only the clothing but also transports us back into the ambiance of that era. This remarkable print offers viewers a window into history while celebrating artistry across various mediums - from painting to lithography - showcasing how different forms collaborate harmoniously to preserve our cultural heritage.
