XOS5884340 A View from Moel Cynwich: Looking Over the Vale of Afon Mawddach and Toward Cader Idris, c. 1850 (w/c with scratch-away, heightened with white) by Turner, William (Turner of Oxford) (1789-1862); 48.9x70.3 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: William Turner (British, 1789-1862)
England, 19th century
As a young man, Turner removed himself from the competitive London art world and returned to his native Oxford to teach and paint in solitude. This retreat may have been because he shared the same name as his contemporary Joseph Mallord William Turner, or it may have been prompted by his apparently retiring personality. He painted prolifically and traveled widely in Britain in search of subjects. This watercolor describes the dramatic mountain scenery of north Wales. The close-up view of the hillside and sheep in the left foreground juxtaposed with the sweeping vista of the mountains of Snowdonia invites a comparison of the minute with the infinite.)

EDITORS COMMENTS
A View from Moel Cynwich: Looking Over the Vale of Afon Mawddach and Toward Cader Idris, c. 1850" is a captivating watercolor print by William Turner, also known as Turner of Oxford. In this stunning artwork, Turner takes us on a visual journey through the breathtaking mountain scenery of north Wales. The composition begins with a close-up view of a hillside adorned with lush greenery and dotted with grazing sheep in the left foreground. This intimate scene draws our attention to the intricate details and textures found in nature's tapestry. As we move our gaze towards the background, an expansive vista unfolds before us. Stretching out majestically are the mountains of Snowdonia, their peaks reaching for the heavens. The artist skillfully captures their grandeur and immensity, inviting us to contemplate our place within this vast landscape. The play between light and shadow creates depth and adds an ethereal quality to the painting. Turner's use of scratch-away technique combined with white highlights enhances certain elements within the artwork, adding further dimensionality to his depiction. It is as if he invites us to explore every nook and cranny of this picturesque vista. As we admire "A View from Moel Cynwich" it becomes clear that Turner was not only a masterful painter but also an avid traveler who sought inspiration in Britain's varied landscapes. His decision to retreat from London's bustling art scene allowed him solitude for both teaching and creating art in his native Oxford. This remarkable piece reminds us that even amidst life's minutiae – symbolized by the hillside and sheep – there exists an infinite beauty waiting to be discovered when we cast our eyes upon nature's wonders.
