Egyptian Family (Sketch for "The Battle of the Pyramids"), c
499809 Egyptian Family (Sketch for " The Battle of the Pyramids" ), c.1835 (oil on linen) by Gros, Antoine Jean (1771-1835); 377.19x154.94 (framed) 353.1x132.1 (unframed) cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: In 1810, Gros exhibited a massive painting of Napoleon at the 1798 Battle of the Pyramids (see below), one of the rare French triumphs in the failed campaign to conquer Egypt (1789-1801). After Napoleon first fell from power in 1814, the painting went into storage, until the new king Louis-Philippe chose to resurrect it for a history museum in Paris. However, perhaps to diminish Napoleons significance, the government asked Gros to amplify the original with an addition at each end. This painting incorporates General Kleber, a famously successful military leader who had been excluded from the original painting.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a sketch titled "Egyptian Family (Sketch for 'The Battle of the Pyramids')" by Antoine Jean Gros. Created in 1835, this oil on linen artwork measures an impressive 377.19x154.94 cm when framed and 353.1x132.1 cm when unframed, and is currently housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. Gros originally exhibited a monumental painting depicting Napoleon during the Battle of the Pyramids in 1798, which was later stored away after his fall from power in 1814. However, it was resurrected by King Louis-Philippe for a history museum in Paris with additional elements requested by the government to diminish Napoleon's significance. This particular sketch incorporates General Kleber into the composition, who had been excluded from the original painting but was known as a highly successful military leader. The scene portrays an Egyptian family amidst the chaos of battle; their expressions reveal fear and vulnerability as they navigate through barefoot onlookers. The artist skillfully captures various emotions within this piece - from the scared child clinging to its mother to the nude father donning a turban while surveying his surroundings with determination. The inclusion of nudity adds another layer of rawness and authenticity to this powerful depiction. Overall, this striking artwork provides viewers with insight into both historical events and human experiences during times of conflict – making it an invaluable addition to any art enthusiast's collection or exhibition space.
