EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured lithograph, titled "Caubul, 1839 circa" offers a glimpse into the historical city of Kabul during the 19th century. Created by Sir Keith A. Jackson and published by W H Allen and Co and T McLean, this print is part of the collection at the National Army Museum in London. The artwork showcases the Bala Hissar fortress, an imposing structure situated south of Kabul city. From its commanding position, one can observe rows of tents below that belonged to the Army of the Indus. In August 1839, these soldiers had occupied Kabul as depicted in this scene. The Bala Hissar fortress itself was divided into two sections: The lower fort housed royal palaces, stables, and barracks while the upper section contained an armoury and dungeons. This lithograph beautifully captures both parts with intricate details. With its vibrant colours and meticulous engravings, this print not only provides a visual representation but also serves as a valuable historical document. It allows viewers to appreciate both the topography of Kabul's landscape and its fortified structures during this significant period. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from Fine Art Finder's collection at Bridgeman Images, we are transported back in time to witness a moment frozen within history - capturing both beauty and intrigue for all who encounter it.
