EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a collection of falconry accessories dating back to the early 17th century. The Falconry bag, glove, and various other items were once owned by James VI of Scotland and I of England, who was an avid falconer. These exquisite pieces are now housed in the Burrell Collection in Glasgow, Scotland. The focal point of the image is the intricately designed leather Falconry bag used to hold essential tools and treats for the falcon. Accompanying it is a matching glove adorned with beautiful embroidery and embellishments. A lure and two hoods complete this remarkable set. These precious artifacts were accidentally left behind at Wroxton Abbey during James' visit on August 23rd, 1619. It was during this stay that he indulged in fashionable pastimes such as hawking and bear baiting. Sir William Pope, owner of Wroxton Abbey at the time, was so honored by James' visit that he later commissioned a stained glass panel to commemorate the occasion. The attention to detail on these accessories is truly remarkable; from delicate wire patterns to silk embroidery depicting royal motifs. They serve as a testament not only to James' passion for falconry but also as symbols of his regal status. This print captures a fascinating glimpse into history while highlighting both the artistry involved in creating these objects and their significance within royal pastimes.
