EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a stunning print of Lieutenant G H B Elliot's tunic, belonging to the 4th (The Kings Own Royal) Regiment from 1874-1881. The fabric is meticulously crafted with wool cloth, adorned with intricate metal thread lace and gilt on copper buttons. This full dress tunic follows the pattern of the era, designed for parades and other formal events. Lieutenant George Henry Blois Elliott, born in 1854, proudly wore this distinguished uniform during his service. Commissioned into the renowned 4th Regiment in November 1875 after serving with the Hampshire Militia since 1871, he joined the battalion stationed in Ireland before being deployed to southern Africa. Arriving in Cape Town in January 1879 alongside his unit, Elliott found himself thrust into action during the invasion of Zululand. He fearlessly fought at significant battles such as Hlobane, Kambula, and Ulundi. However, despite his valiant efforts and contributions to his regiment's success, he resigned from his commission in March 1880. This remarkable print not only captures a piece of military history but also serves as a tribute to Lieutenant G H B Elliot's bravery and dedication during his time serving with The Kings Own Royal Regiment. Preserved by the National Army Museum in London, it stands as a testament to both an individual soldier's story and an important period within British military heritage.
