EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a remarkable piece of history, the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Medal 1897 awarded to Captain John Grant Malcolmson VC. The medal, crafted from metal, is a testament to Captain Malcolmson's exceptional bravery and service in the 3rd Regiment of Bombay Light Cavalry. Captain John Grant Malcolmson (1835-1902) was an esteemed military officer who earned his place in history through numerous courageous acts. He received the prestigious Victoria Cross (VC) for his valiant actions during the Battle of Khoosh-ab in 1857, where he served with distinction during the Persian War. His India General Service Medal proudly bears the clasp for Persia as recognition of this achievement. Notably, Captain Malcolmson also played a vital role during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-59. His contributions at significant events such as the Siege of Ratghur and fall of Kalpi earned him further accolades, including the clasp for Central India on his Mutiny Medal. In addition to his military achievements, Captain Malcolmson became one of Queen Victoria's Gentleman-at-Arms in 1870—a position held by only a select few individuals. As part of this distinguished group, he was among approximately 980 army officers chosen to receive the Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Medal in 1897. Preserved within this print courtesy of Bridgeman Images and housed at London's National Army Museum, this historic artifact serves as a tangible reminder not only of Captain John Grant Malcolmson's extraordinary accomplishments but also pays homage to all those who have selflessly served their country throughout history.
