Taurus, c.1825 (card, paper, tissue )
7340884 Taurus, c.1825 (card, paper, tissue ) by Hall, Sydney (fl.1826); 20.3x14 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Sidney Hall
Plate 17. A set of thirty-two constellation cards entitled 'Urania's Mirror', with a chart of the heavens for the latitude of London (by Jehoshaphat Aspin), all contained within a box depicting Urania, the personification of Astronomy. They were sold as an attractive but educational item, presumably to be used within a domestic setting and reflecting the rising taste for improving pastimes in the later 18th and early 19th century. The set was often accompanied by a copy of Aspin's 'Familiar Treatise on Astronomy' (1825), written especially for the purpose.
The cards are hand coloured and show the stars and traditional imagery for the major constellations. The cards give compass directions, the names of the constellations and the most important stars. They feature eighty constellations and two sub-constellations, some of which are no longer recognised. The artwork and choice of constellations is inspired by Alexander Jamieson's 'Celestial Atlas' (1822).); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the intricate beauty of Taurus, one of the thirty-two constellation cards from Sidney Hall's 'Urania's Mirror' collection. Created around 1825, this piece is a true masterpiece of art and astronomy.
The card features hand-colored illustrations of stars and traditional imagery associated with Taurus, providing compass directions, constellation names, and important star details. The attention to detail in depicting the celestial wonders is truly remarkable.
Part of a set designed for educational purposes, these constellation cards were meant to be used within domestic settings as a way to learn about the night sky. Accompanied by Jehoshaphat Aspin's 'Familiar Treatise on Astronomy', these cards were both attractive and informative.
Inspired by Alexander Jamieson's 'Celestial Atlas', Hall's artwork showcases eighty constellations and two sub-constellations, some no longer recognized today. The box containing Urania, the personification of Astronomy, adds an extra layer of charm to this already enchanting piece.
As we gaze upon this print of Taurus from nearly two centuries ago, we are reminded of the timeless allure and wonderment that the stars hold for us all. It serves as a beautiful reminder of our place in the vast universe above us.
