Portrait of Agostino Barbarigo, after 1571 (oil on canvas)

491126 Portrait of Agostino Barbarigo, after 1571 (oil on canvas) by Veronese, (Paolo Caliari) (1528-88); 102.2x104.2 cm; Cleveland Museum of Art, OH, USA; (add.info.: Agostino Barbarigo (1518-71) was a member of a prominent Venetian family and second in command of the Venetian naval forces during the Battle of Lepanto against the Turks (October 7, 1571). During that battle, Barbarigo was killed by a Turkish arrow, which he holds in the portrait. In the 1500s, Venetian military portraits often portrayed the sitter in armour in a pose typical of a Roman emperor. Barbarigo wears the field armour of a military commander with red velvet and gilt edges. The lion mask appliquA©s are probably a reference to the Venetian Republic (symbolized by the lion of Saint Mark).); Gift of Mrs. L. E. Holden, Mr. and Mrs. Guerdon S. Holden, and the L. E. Holden Fund; Italian, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait print depicts Agostino Barbarigo, a prominent member of the Venetian Republic and second in command of their naval forces during the historic Battle of Lepanto against the Turks in 1571. Painted by Veronese, also known as Paolo Caliari, this oil on canvas artwork measures 102.2x104.2 cm and is housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA. In this painting, Barbarigo stands proudly wearing field armor adorned with red velvet and gilt edges. The lion mask appliqués on his attire symbolize the powerful Venetian Republic represented by the lion of Saint Mark. This portrayal follows a common theme seen in Venetian military portraits from that era - depicting sitters in armor resembling Roman emperors. Tragically, Barbarigo met his demise during the Battle of Lepanto when he was struck down by a Turkish arrow. Remarkably, Veronese captures this poignant moment by including an arrow held firmly within Barbarigo's hand. The artist skillfully portrays both strength and leadership through Barbarigo's bearded countenance and commanding presence. This half-length portrait immortalizes him as a revered commander who fought valiantly for his country. Gifted to the museum by Mrs. L. E Holden along with Mr. and Mrs Guerdon S. Holden through the L. E Holden Fund, this remarkable piece serves as a commemorative tribute to Agostino Barbarigo's bravery and sacrifice during one of history's most significant sea battles.
