Manchester Art Gallery holds a fascinating collection of artist-designed posters, Commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The EMB's main function was to increase sales of Empire-grown and Empire-made goods throughout Great Britain, its Dominions and its Colonies. One aspect of its activities was a poster campaign that was designed to turn Britons into Empire-conscious consumers. Over 200 posters were acquired by Manchester Art Gallery in the 1930s. The posters strong images illustrate the Empire's people, places and products. EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant and captivating photo print, titled "Gathering Apricots for Canning - Australia" transports us to a time when the British Empire was at its height. Created by Archibald Bertram Webb in 1930, this colour lithograph was commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board (EMB) as part of their poster campaign to promote Empire-grown and Empire-made goods. The image depicts a group of apricot pickers amidst lush orchards in Australia. Their sun-kissed faces and colorful attire reflect the vibrancy of their surroundings. With baskets filled with ripe apricots, they diligently gather the fruits that will soon be preserved through canning. Housed within Manchester Art Gallery's remarkable collection of artist-designed posters from the EMB era, this print is not only visually striking but also carries historical significance. These posters aimed to foster an empire-conscious consumer culture across Great Britain and its colonies during a time of immense political power dynamics. However, viewing these images today raises important questions about the legacies left behind by colonialism. While celebrating the beauty and diversity within the British Empire, we must confront uncomfortable beliefs associated with it. As we gaze upon this evocative artwork captured by Bridgeman Images on behalf of Manchester Art Gallery, let us appreciate its artistic merit while acknowledging its complex historical context.
