EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolour print titled "Duel on the Champion Stone" depicts a fierce battle between two warriors, believed to be Native Americans, in the mid-19th century. The scene showcases a large stone disk adorned with intricate carvings, possibly the Stone of Tizoc. Standing atop the disk is a man wearing a white cone-shaped hat and feathered pants, holding a club and grasping a mysterious red object with green leaves or feathers. On the ground below stands his opponent, dressed in an ocelot (or leopard) skin suit complete with its head and shield. Both men aim their clubs at each other as they engage in this intense duel. The artwork was part of C. H. S. 's collection of watercolor drawings featuring indigenous populations from North, South, and Central America, Mexico, and the West Indies during that era. The unknown artist skillfully captured every detail of their traditional costumes and weapons. This stunning piece not only highlights the clash between these two individuals but also offers insight into Native American culture at that time. It serves as a reminder of their strength, bravery, and unique attire while engaging in combat. The vibrant colors used by the artist bring life to this historical moment frozen in time. Displayed at Newberry Library in Chicago since its acquisition from Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder collection; it continues to captivate viewers with its rich depiction of this dramatic duel between warriors from centuries past.
