Housed at the Manchester Art Gallery, UK, this colour lithograph was commissioned by the Empire Marketing Board and printed by Johnson, Riddle & Co Ltd for HMSO. The Manchester Art Gallery boasts an intriguing collection of artist-designed posters that were commissioned by the British government's Empire Marketing Board between 1926 and 1933. The primary objective of this board was to boost sales of goods produced within the British Empire across Great Britain, its Dominions, and Colonies. With over 200 posters acquired during the 1930s, these powerful images depicted various aspects of life within the empire - its people, places, and products. However, when viewed through a contemporary lens, these posters sometimes evoke uncomfortable beliefs and raise challenging questions about the lasting impact of colonialism. While they provide insight into historical perspectives on empire-building and consumer consciousness at that time period, they also prompt us to reflect on their legacies today. This particular print showcases sisal cultivation in East Africa – a vital industry within the empire during that era. Its vibrant colors bring to life both the beauty of nature and human labor intertwined with economic growth.
