EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable painting titled "A Procession of Queen Elizabeth I" by Robert Peake, dating back to the early 17th century. The artwork beautifully captures the grandeur and elegance of Queen Elizabeth I's procession through a bustling town. At the heart of the scene, we see the queen seated in a magnificent canopy chair of state, carried gracefully by six gentlemen. Distinguished Knights of the Garter lead her way, adorned with their distinctive collars. As we follow along, we notice her loyal ladies-in-waiting trailing behind on the right side. The Yeomen of the Guard march closely behind them, while a band of gentlemen pensioners lines their path. Amongst these esteemed knights is Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, standing closest to Her Majesty. The painting also highlights other notable figures such as Henry Lord Hernoden carrying the Sword of State before Queen Elizabeth I and William Cecil, Lord Burghley - Lord High Treasurer - holding his white staff in hand. Charles Howard follows suit as Admiral and later becomes Lord Nottingham. Each Knight of the Garter proudly displays a ribbon around their necks with an exquisite gem or intaglio pendant attached to it. This meticulously detailed artwork provides us with a glimpse into one momentous occasion during Queen Elizabeth I's reign. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, this print allows us to appreciate both Peake's artistic skill and historical significance captured within this masterpiece for generations to come.
