EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the elegance and sophistication of Mme Darsonval, a Parisian woman from the late 19th century. The exquisite craftsmanship of her attire is evident in this wool, silk, and lace ensemble. The waist-length bodice features a stunning grey silk frill edged with delicate cream lace, creating an intricate and feminine design. The high standing collar adds a touch of regality to the overall look. Mme Darsonval's outfit is meticulously lined throughout with pink corded silk, ensuring both comfort and quality. The hem is bound with a pink silk bias strip, adding a subtle pop of color to the otherwise muted palette. The separate skirt opens at the center back and fastens with pleats that cleverly conceal the opening. Two bows on either side of the opening add an extra touch of charm while allowing for movement and ease. Notable details include three grey chiffon roses adorning the right side seam as well as shaped and stiffened epaulettes that enhance Mme Darsonval's silhouette. A printed label on the waistband reveals that this exquisite creation was made by "Mme. Darsonval, Robes & Manteaux" located at 17 Rue Chanez in Paris. Displayed at Manchester Art Gallery in the UK, this remarkable piece showcases not only French fashion from over a century ago but also serves as a testament to timeless style and craftsmanship that continues to inspire today.
