1908 Collection

The 1908 Summer Olympics, held in London, England, were the fourth modern Olympic Games. The event was hosted by the United Kingdom and took place from April 27 to October 31. It was the first time that the Olympics had been held in Europe and it was also the first time that a team from outside of Europe competed at an Olympic Games. A total of 22 nations participated in these games with 2,008 athletes competing in 110 events across 19 sports. This included track and field events such as running, jumping and throwing; swimming; cycling; gymnastics; tennis; rowing; sailing; football (soccer); rugby union; wrestling and weightlifting. The 1908 Olympics saw some significant milestones including being the first games to feature an Olympic marathon race as well as being one of only two occasions when tug-of-war has been featured as an official sport at an Olympic Games.
