Boxing at Wembley Stadium 1924 EPW011412

The first ever boxing match at Wembley Stadium, London on 9th August 1924. This was a light heavyweight contest between "Basking" Jack Bloomfield and Tommy Gibbons. The undercard included a heavyweight contest between Phil Scott and Andre Anderson (won by Scott). Bloomfield, from Islington had been British Light Heavyweight champion since 1922, shortly after moving up from Middleweight. Gibbons, from Minnesota, had recently lost the World Heavyweight title to Jack Dempsey in 1923. Although he was coming towards the end of his career he was still a formidable opponent, losing only four times in over a hundred bouts. Gibbons won by a knockout in the third round and Bloomfield never fought again. Gibbons retired the following year after his fourth defeat. The promoter was bankrupted after struggling to meet Gibbons financial demands. Aerofilms Collection (see Links)

LCC-LFB Islington fire station stables

Islington's first fire station opened in 1860 in Florence Street. The station pictured here was located in Upper Street, and opened in 1899. Horses would remain in use in the London Fire Brigade until 1921, although motorised fire engine were being introduced into the service in increasing numbers from the early 1900s. Coachmen were designated firemen responsible for driving the horse drawn engines, and the horses were stabled at the fire station in stalls within or adjacent to the engine room

Smallpox and Vaccination Hospital, Highgate, London

The Highgate Smallpox and Vaccination Hospital, designed by Samuel Daukes, opened in 1850. In around 1896, after a new smallpox hospital opened at South Mimms, the Highgate site in North London was acquired by Islington for a new workhouse infirmary, with the old hospital being converted to a nurses' home. The site later became the St Mary's wing of Whittington Hospital
