Felix Mendelssohn Collection

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the early Romantic period. He was born in Hamburg to a Jewish family but converted to Christianity as an adult. Mendelssohn is best known for his overtures and incidental music for Shakespeare's plays A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest, as well as his oratorio Elijah. He wrote numerous symphonies, concertos, chamber music pieces, piano works, and choral compositions. His influence on 19th century European music is immense; he helped revive interest in the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel by performing their compositions throughout Europe.
