SEM of a cat flea

Cat flea. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) seen from the side. Its body is laterally-flattened to allow it to move easily through the fur of its cat host. One of the fleas eyes (green) can be seen on its head at centre right. Comb-like spines on the head, called ctenidia, help to anchor the flea in the fur of its host. The mandibles (not clearly seen) are modified to pierce the skin and suck blood. Fleas have three pairs of legs, with the long hindlegs adapted for jumping. Most fleas remain on their host only while feeding. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a cat flea, captured through a scanning electron microscope. The lateral-flattened body of this tiny insect allows it to effortlessly navigate through the fur of its feline host. Positioned at the center right, one can spot the mesmerizing green eye of the flea, providing a glimpse into its fascinating anatomy. The head of this cat flea is adorned with comb-like spines known as ctenidia, which serve to firmly anchor it within the fur. These minute structures play a crucial role in ensuring that the flea remains securely attached to its host. Although not clearly visible in this image, the mandibles are modified for piercing and extracting blood from their unfortunate victims. With three pairs of legs at their disposal, fleas possess hindlegs specially adapted for jumping great distances. However, these agile creatures typically spend most of their time on their hosts solely during feeding sessions. This extraordinary photograph offers an up-close look at nature's remarkable creations and serves as a testament to both scientific curiosity and artistic beauty. It invites us to marvel at even the tiniest inhabitants of our world while deepening our understanding and appreciation for these often misunderstood creatures.
