Hummingbird hawkmoths (Macroglossa stellatarium), 19th century illustration. This moth is an expert hoverer and it darts from flower to flower with its long proboscis uncoiled. This gives it the illusion of a hummingbird (hence their name). The hummingbird hawkmoth is strongly attracted to flowers that provide a plentiful supply of nectar, such as red valerian.
