Cabbage white caterpillar, SEM
Cabbage white caterpillar. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the caterpillar (larva) of a large (or cabbage) white butterfly (Pieris brassicae). Several dark ocelli (simple eyes) can be seen on the caterpillars head (upper left). Some of its legs are seen at lower centre. This caterpillar is covered in hairs which make it unpalatable to predators. These caterpillars do huge amounts of damage to the cabbage crops in Europe, as they feed almost exclusively on these plants from birth until they pupate. Magnification: x19 at 5x7cm size. Magnification: x48 at 5x7ins size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a Cabbage white caterpillar, taken using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The colored SEM image reveals the larva of a large white butterfly, known as Pieris brassicae. At first glance, one can observe several dark ocelli or simple eyes on the caterpillar's head in the upper left corner. Additionally, some of its legs are visible at the lower center. The remarkable feature that sets this caterpillar apart is its dense covering of hairs. These hairs serve as a defense mechanism against predators by making it unappetizing to them. Unfortunately, despite their unpalatability to other creatures, these voracious eaters cause significant damage to cabbage crops throughout Europe. From birth until they pupate, these caterpillars exclusively feed on cabbage plants. The magnification used for this photograph is x19 when printed at 5x7cm size and increases to an impressive x48 when enlarged to 5x7 inches. This level of detail allows us to appreciate the complexity and beauty found within nature's smallest creatures. This stunning image captures not only the scientific significance but also highlights the delicate balance between wildlife and agriculture in our ecosystem.
