Ambroise Pare, French surgeon

Ambroise Pare (1504-1590), French surgeon. Pare, who worked in the army as a barber-surgeon, is considered to be the father of modern surgery. In those days sword and gun wounds were treated with boiling oil and bleeding was often stopped by cauterization. During the 1536 siege of Turin, Italy, Pare used egg yolk, rose oil and turpentine to dress wounds as no boiling oil was available. This treatment proved more successful, and less painful, than boiling oil. Pare pioneered the use of ligature (tying off blood vessels) in amputations, created artificial limbs and improved obstetrical methods

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Ambroise Paré, a renowned French surgeon who revolutionized the field of medicine. With his pioneering techniques and innovative thinking, Paré is widely regarded as the father of modern surgery. During an era when sword and gun wounds were treated with boiling oil and cauterization was common practice, Paré fearlessly challenged these brutal methods. In a moment that would forever change medical history, he found himself in Turin during its 1536 siege without access to boiling oil for wound treatment. Undeterred by this setback, Paré ingeniously concocted a mixture of egg yolk, rose oil, and turpentine to dress wounds instead. To his astonishment, this alternative treatment proved not only more successful but also less agonizing for patients than traditional boiling oil. This breakthrough propelled him forward on his quest to improve surgical practices further. Paré's contributions extended beyond wound care; he introduced ligature techniques for amputations and played a pivotal role in developing artificial limbs. Additionally, he made significant advancements in obstetrical methods. Through this mesmerizing colored illustration capturing the essence of Ambroise Paré's legacy as both a doctor and inventor, we are reminded of his profound impact on the world of medicine. His unwavering dedication to alleviating human suffering has left an indelible mark on history—a true pioneer whose name will forever be synonymous with progress in surgery.
