EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of a daring deck landing by French aviator Brie on board the Italian ship Fiemme, with the Cierva C30A Rota 1, K4230 in the background. The Cierva C30A, a pioneering autogiro designed by Spanish engineer Juan de la Cierva, underwent significant modifications by the Cierva company in 1935, including the fitment of Walter Kidde and RFD flotation gear, to prepare it for deck landing operations. After completion of the modifications, the aircraft was transferred to the School of Army Co-operation for service trials. Following successful trials, K4230 was loaned to the Admiralty and embarked on HMS Courageous for sea service trials during the Summer Cruise in July 1935. The final deck landing test was conducted on HMS Furious on 9 September 1935, marking a significant milestone in the development of vertical take-off and landing aircraft. The Cierva C30A, with its innovative design and capabilities, paved the way for future rotorcraft and played a crucial role in the evolution of military aviation.
