EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900), the second son and fourth child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, in the prime of his life. Taken in February 1863, the image showcases the young prince's regal bearing and handsome features. At the time of the photograph, Prince Alfred was the seventh child of Queen Victoria, who would go on to have nine children in total. Born on August 6, 1844, Prince Alfred was known as "Affie" to his family. He was educated at home and served in the Royal Navy, following in the footsteps of his father and elder brother, Prince Albert Edward (later King Edward VII). In 1866, Prince Alfred married Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, a union that brought the two royal families closer together. Tragically, Prince Alfred's life was marked by several near-fatal accidents. In 1871, he was the victim of an assassination attempt during a visit to Australia, during which he was stabbed multiple times but managed to recover. In 1899, he was involved in a carriage accident that left him with a broken leg. Despite these challenges, Prince Alfred remained an active and beloved member of the royal family. He was known for his kind and generous nature, and was deeply devoted to his wife and children. In 1884, he assumed the title of Duke of Edinburgh upon the death of his elder brother, Prince Albert Victor. Prince Alfred passed away on December 31, 1900, at the age of 56. This historic photograph, imported from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the life of a fascinating and complex figure in British history. With its rich detail and captivating composition, it serves as a poignant reminder of the Duke of Edinburgh's enduring legacy.
