This evocative photograph captures the grim determination of Serbian troops during the First World War, as they huddle in a mountain trench on the Salonika Front. Dated 1916, the image portrays the soldiers braving the harsh conditions of the treacherous mountain range between Albania and Greece. The rugged terrain, marked by steep cliffs and rocky crags, presented a significant challenge to both the Allied and Central Powers during the conflict. The Serbian army, having suffered heavy losses during earlier battles, was now part of the Allied forces in the Salonika campaign. The troops are seen here, armed with rifles and ammunition, preparing for the next assault. The trench, dug into the side of the mountain, offers some protection against enemy fire, but the soldiers are exposed to the elements, with rain and snow adding to their hardships. Thessaloniki, or Thessalonica, as it was also known, was a strategic city in Macedonia, and the Salonika Front was a major theater of war during the First World War. The city had been captured by the Allies in October 1915, and the Salonika Front became the site of several significant battles between the Allied and Central Powers. The campaign lasted until the end of the war in 1918.
