EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing handcoloured copperplate engraving by Thomas Rowlandson, after an illustration by Henry Bunbury, we find ourselves in the midst of an exhilarating yet chaotic scene from Geoffrey Gambado's "An Academy for Grown Horsemen and Annals of Horsemanship," published in London in 1809. The image captures the essence of Regency-era equestrian life, complete with its challenges and mishaps. At the center of the print, a dapper Regency gentleman, dressed in fashionable attire, expertly uses a long whip to steer a spirited horse. The horse, with its ears pricked and eyes focused intently on the women in the background, has evidently become "bolted," or spooked, and is in the midst of a gallop. The gentleman's quick thinking and skilled use of the whip prevent an accident, as the horse's movements could easily have knocked the two women in the gig off balance. Behind the gentleman, the two women in the gig, dressed in elegant Regency gowns, struggle to maintain control of their own horse, which appears to be equally agitated. The women's wide-eyed expressions and disheveled appearance suggest the tension and excitement of the moment. In the background, a wheelbarrow filled with potatoes provides a humorous contrast to the scene, adding a touch of everyday life to this sporting image. The intricate details of the handcoloured engraving, from the folds of the Regency clothing to the textures of the horse's mane and tail, bring the scene to life and transport us back to the Regency era. This print is a testament to the thrill and unpredictability of horse riding during this period, as well as the importance of horsemanship skills in everyday life.
