EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Edouard Travies for Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849, showcases two of the world's most endangered bird species: the Madagascan crested ibis (Lophotibis cristata) and the grey crowned crane (Balearica regulorum). The Madagascan crested ibis, depicted on the left, is a near-threatened species native to Madagascar. With a distinctive white face, black plumage, and a tall, curved crest, it is one of the rarest birds in the world, with an estimated population of only around 500 individuals. The primary threats to this species include habitat loss, hunting, and competition with introduced species. On the right, the grey crowned crane, an endangered species, is depicted with its elegant grey plumage, long legs, and distinctive grey crown. Native to Africa, this crane is known for its graceful courtship displays and distinctive call. The grey crowned crane faces numerous threats, including habitat loss, hunting, and collision with power lines. Both of these magnificent birds are depicted in intricate detail in this beautiful handcoloured engraving, which serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats.
