Levrault in Paris, France, in 1816, showcases two fascinating marine mammals: the Leopard Seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) and the Mediterranean Monk Seal (Monachus monachus). The illustration, from Frederic Cuvier's Dictionary of Natural Science: Mammals, was created by the skilled artist Jean Gabriel Pretre, with engraving by Massard under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The Leopard Seal, also known as the Sea Leopard, is a powerful predator found in the Antarctic waters. With its distinctive spotted coat, this seal is well-adapted to its icy environment. The engraving captures the animal's muscular body and sharp teeth, which it uses to hunt prey such as fish, squid, and crabs.
