EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking illustration showcases the historic coat worn by Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson during the pivotal Battle of Trafalgar in October 1805. The battle, which took place off the coast of Cape Trafalgar in Spain, marked a significant victory for the British Royal Navy against the combined French and Spanish fleets. Nelson, a renowned naval hero, was fatally wounded during the battle but managed to give the order to continue the attack before succumbing to his injuries. The coat, now a cherished relic of British naval history, was created in 1845 by the renowned military tailor, Thomas and Betty Cooper. It was commissioned by the Admiralty to create an exact replica of the coat Nelson wore during the battle. The original coat, which was damaged during the battle, was not preserved and this replica is the closest representation we have of the iconic garment. The coat is adorned with numerous decorations, including the Star of the Order of the Bath, a gold medal for Nelson's victory at the Battle of the Nile in 1800, and a gold locket containing a lock of Nelson's hair. The coat's red uniform, with its gold buttons and white lapels, is a testament to the grandeur and pomp of the British naval tradition. This illustration, produced in 1845, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the historical significance of this iconic coat and the man who wore it. The Battle of Trafalgar is a pivotal moment in British history, and this relic serves as a powerful reminder of the courage and determination of Nelson and the British navy during this time.
