Armentieres - Le Pont de Nieppe

Armentieres - Le Pont de Nieppe. During World War I, in April 1918, German forces shelled Armentieres with mustard gas. British troops were forced to evacuate the area but German troops could not enter the commune for two weeks because of the heavy contamination. Witnesses to the bombardment stated that the shelling was so heavy that liquid mustard ran in the streets. This beautiful 18th century three span bridge was also destroyed during the war. Date: circa 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
Armentieres - Le Pont de Nieppe: A Historical Snapshot of a Destroyed 18th Century Bridge During World War I This evocative photograph captures the remnants of Armentieres' Le Pont de Nieppe, an 18th century three-span bridge that once spanned the River Lys in northern France. The bridge, a testament to the region's rich history, was unfortunately destroyed during the tumultuous events of World War I. In April 1918, German forces launched a relentless mustard gas attack on the commune of Armentieres. The intensity of the bombardment was so severe that liquid mustard gas reportedly flowed through the streets. British troops were forced to evacuate the area, leaving the German troops unable to enter for two weeks due to the heavy contamination. The devastating impact of the mustard gas attack extended to the historic bridge, reducing it to ruins. This photograph, taken circa 1910s, serves as a poignant reminder of the bridge's former glory and the tragic events that led to its destruction. The River Lys, which once flowed peacefully beneath the bridge, is now a backdrop to the remnants of this once-majestic structure. The presence of barges on the river adds a sense of tranquility to the scene, contrasting the chaos and destruction that once engulfed this area during the First World War. This image is a poignant snapshot of history, offering a glimpse into the past and the profound impact of war on communities and their heritage.
