EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts an imaginary reconstruction of the ancient Acropolis at Pergamon in Turkey, with a focus on the magnificent Altar of Zeus. The Acropolis of Pergamon, located in present-day Bergama, was a significant cultural center during the Hellenistic period of ancient Greece, around the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. The city, situated in Asia Minor, was renowned for its grandeur and urbanism, which influenced the Mediterranean world. The Altar of Zeus, a masterpiece of Hellenistic architecture, is the focal point of this image. The altar, dedicated to the king of the gods, was adorned with intricate sculptures and decorative elements, reflecting the wealth and power of the Pergamon kingdom. The altar's most famous feature was the colossal statue of Zeus, which was said to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Although the original statue no longer exists, its legacy lives on through descriptions and depictions in ancient texts and art. This stunning print is the work of German painter Friedrich von Thiersch, who created it in 1882. His artistic interpretation of the Acropolis at Pergamon and the Altar of Zeus offers a glimpse into the grandeur and majesty of this ancient site, transporting us back in time to an era of Greek culture and artistry that continues to captivate and inspire us today.
